Grading Policy

I use a weighted grading system, meaning certain components of the student's grade carry more
weight, or value, on the overall grade.

MATH:
7th and 8th grade math classes have two components of the total quarterly (nine weeks) grade.
The "homework" component includes classwork, homework, and participation aspects of the
student's effort and contribution.
This component is worth 30% of the overall grade.

The "test" component includes tests, quizzes, and special projects (usually completed in the
classroom under teacher direction).
This component is worth 70% of the overall grade.

Per district policy, semester tests are weighted at 20% of the overall semester grade.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
8th grade social studies (US History 1800-1900) has three components to the total quarterly (nine weeks) grade.
The "classwork" component includes activities of the classroom such as reading, writing and
class discussion aspects of the student's effort and contribution.
This component is worth 20% of the overall grade.

The "special projects" component includes various research and presentation projects assigned
throughout the grading period.  Students are provided written instructions along with a grading
rubric so they are clear on expectations and standards for grading the project.
This component is worth 40% of the overall grade.

The "test" component includes tests and quizzes over material presented in class, notes, text
or handouts (this means students are responsible for reading assigned handouts and materials).
This component is worth 40% of the overall grade.

Per district policy, semester tests are weighted at 20% of the overall semester grade.
